Weekly Reflection – Topic 10

Hi everyone! Today I wanted to review one of the group project topics that I watched. One of the videos I watched was Pod 10: Google Gemini as a tool for marking/assessment. The first thing I will say is the editing was awesome! It was such an eye catching video with fun music and animations. I think this was a really good topic to explore because we have been discussing AI so much throughout this program. I personally think it can be a great tool for teachers and for assessment but with a lot of caution. I really enjoyed how Pod 10 discussed the pros and cons of using it for assessment. I think it could be useful for small assignments that are basic because AI may give incorrect information if you get too complicated. I am curious about it being used to grade essays because it may not look out for some key things that you would teach in your class, but I suppose you could also put all of the requirements in the AI prompt. As they discussed in their mini presentation in class, using it for practice quizzes could be very useful and efficient because they are small and not typically for student marks. As long as you triple check the output it gives you to ensure that all of the material is correct, it could be a really good tool for this. I also found a youtube video about the best 3 AI grading tools that teachers use if anyone is interested in learning more about that:

I just wanted to finish this post by talking about the two main questions that popped into my mind while I was watching the video. Pod 10 discusses how if you are going to use AI for assessment, teachers must be transparent with students and tell them upfront that they use it. I was just wondering about how that conversation would go because I could see some students fighting back or being mad that they are not allowed to use AI but the teacher is. So if anyone has any insight on that let me know! The other question I had was about science teaching and whether any of the members in Pod 10 would use it for their science teaching. Sometimes AI is not good at creating or answering science questions depending on the difficulty so I think this would be an area where we have to be very careful.
